How To Find Older Versions Of WordPress

WordPress Release Archive:

Lately, I have received many questions whether it’s possible to find and install older versions of WordPress. The answer is yes, there are. I’m going to show you where to find them.

You can either watch the detailed video tutorial below or scroll below that to read the image/text version of the tutorial.

In most cases, the most recent release of WordPress is the only one you should be downloading and installing.

That’s because the most recent version is the only version with the latest security patches. At the time of this writing, the newest version is 4.8 and it is the most secure one right now.

With that said, if you still want to find older versions of WordPress here’s how you do it!

Next click on the Download WordPress button in the upper right-hand corner.

Now, to get to the back-dated versions of WordPress, you must click on the Release Archive link on the left.

On the next page, you’ll see all of the previous versions of WordPress. You have many of them to choose from so I’m sure you’ll find what you were looking for. There’s a huge list of main versions and sub-versions in this archive and you can download and install any of them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These older versions are not maintained so you will have security vulnerabilities on any site running them.

When you download, you have three options to choose from regarding the compression type. There are zip versions, tar.gz and IIS zip versions. Pick the version you want to download and then download it by clicking on the type of compression you would like.
