A WordPress staging site is a duplicate of the production site (live site) where you can safely update plugins, make design changes or test new ideas.
“Staging site” is a fancy way of saying “testing site” or “testing environment”.
If the staging site breaks it doesn’t affect your live site, that’s why it’s safe to play with.
And if you make lots of changes you can migrate the staging site back to live.
With the free version of the plugin in this tutorial you would have to migrate all the changes manually.
With the paid version you can migrate the staging site to replace your live site in one click.
